“Internal knowledge management system at industry level shall help peers or practitioners to maintain continuous knowledge transfer in order to make a qualified workforce to attain a common goal.”

Skill sets are a collection of abilities and skills that basically makes an individual. These skills and abilities are as such that they help one get on about their daily lives. These very skills and abilities help us hone our inner selves as well as our professional lives. Some are natural abilities while some are learnt through education and practice as well as determination and ambition of the said person.

There are many ways to hone ones skill set such as:

1.Having a clear goal about what to do

Before doing any kind of practice or research, one must be sure of what they want to do and whether or not they are ready to undertake the discipline and hard work that comes with the skill that they wish to master. It makes absolutely no since to dive into a certain ability just because some famous TV character has it. This has to be a decision made by the individual themselves after considering several aspects and their pros and cons.

2.Choosing the right mentor

People usually choose the wrong mentor to follow when trying to improve a skill or ability. If you want to play cricket well, the player should study the moves of cricket players not football players. Likewise the mentor should also be well versed with the skill that you want to improve or take on as it is much better to study the recognized mentors than someone who is just an intermediate player. Choosing the right people for the job makes it easier to understand and learn unlike those who are not yet at the mastery level.

A poor mentor may get you drained and knock the zeal out of you, whereas a good mentor will push you towards challenges and goals with direction and may scrutinize directly for an improvement in quality output. Mentors are always the foundation stones in excelling one’s career and expertise.

3.Being aware of one’s strengths and weaknesses’

It takes a great deal of courage to admit to ones weakness and work with them. If you are sure that the skill or ability you want to pursue is out of your league and cannot be done under any circumstance it’s ok to step back and move on, but if you are sure you can do that certain activity to help you learn or improve then do it with all your might. In short trust in your gut feeling and go with the flow that it comes with. It is common to see that the folks are getting driven by influencers and other updates where there are more crowd, it is not always true that the much-applauded item on media is the best thing to target to. Stay updated and always do research before proceeding and opting anything for your reference.

Many people feel that there are skills that do not serve any purpose but in reality, those very ‘purposeless’ skills get them from 0 to 100. Having them individualizes a person and makes them unique to an event that only they can control and harness. It is at such times when they’re not so dominant skills begin to shine and reap fruits. Regardless the use, each ability has it own purpose and can be cultivated as such using proper education and the ambition of the skill holder.

In this era the most prominent skill is being a people’s person. Networking with people can get you a long way from your starting point towards achieving your goals. This also depends on choosing the right people to mingle with as the wrong company will probably land you in a place you would have not imagined to be in. this brings us back to the 3rd point where mentors should be chosen according to the skills or abilities you want to improve or acquire.

These skills not only help in real life situations but also when dealing with ones career and lifestyle choices. For example, when applying for a job at a call center the skill of cooking is less required than the skill of communication which will get the top most priority when selecting a candidate, but this does not mean that the candidate with good cooking skills will not get a job, they could be hired into a different position such as in the canteen where all the call center workers go to have their break thus being a win-win situation for both candidates having their unique abilities.

Now you may be wondering….How do I know what skills or abilities I have? Well the answer is as simple as it can get…doing a self analysis. There are many methods of carrying out a self analysis one of which is the SWOT analysis used by businesses, then there is the personality test taken to understand ones MBIT (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Assessment) type more and get better psychological help, observing how you handle certain tasks and what you do when faced with problems, asking a friend or relative about what your potential skills may be as mostly other people have more keen observation of how another person is than we ourselves do and many more.

Asking yourselves these questions will not only help you identify your abilities but also your short comings and how you can improve on them or avoid them if in case they fall under the category of weakness that cannot be overcome, in that case it is just wise to accept that one flaw and carry on. Ultimately, you’ll likely use a combination of methods to take inventory of your skills. Regardless of how you do it, taking stock of your skills is an important part of a job search and overall career planning.

Once the inventory of your skill set is taken, move on to developing skills that can help you with your career and those that can help you outside your career boundary. In essence the secondary skills can be of one’s passion or hobbies that to can ultimately bring about passive income if used right. If your day job is a sales man and you possess the skills of a copywriter then in your free time you can write up content as a freelancer and earn side cash or simply relax playing a musical instrument you know after a long days work. All this depends on the person who has the abilities and can use them to their benefits. It does not necessarily mean that the ability you have must come in handy but it is much recommended that they do help when need be.
